Fairgoods brand director Shauna Hartsook spent her 2016 summer in Paris learning type design. She was accepted into the TypeParis program where she learned the know-how in typeface design, calligraphy techniques, type history and font software. With lots of help from her teachers, including world renowned typographers Jean Francois Porchez, and Xavier Dupré, Shauna created her first ever typeface, Sans Français.
The letters were constructed from her calligraphic drawings based on the humanist model. Shauna loved the unique “pinch” element that was naturally created by the calligraphy tool, so she exaggerated this element as well as the rounded terminals and serifs.
In addition to the 26 upper and lowercase letters in the English language, this typeface also includes old-style numerals, punctuation, ligatures and several diacritics. The typeface is a high-contrast and is intended for display purposes.
The name Sans Français which means "Without French" is a bit of a joke because Shauna couldn't speak any french during her time in Paris, although she did try.
Fairgoods is generous enough to give this font away for free, so please enjoy and do share with us what you create with it.
