Mary Catherine Pflug
Mary Catherine Pflug attended South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, a fine arts boarding school, where she studied under her mentor, Neil Summerour. Mary Catherine designed her first typeface, Dumpling, during her senior year. After graduation, she she moved on to Rollins College, where she studies International Business. When she’s not studying, she’s the publisher of The Independent — a magazine she also co-founded — and a board member of the Society of Typographic Aficionados, among other things.
The Independent has been one of her most rewarding projects. “I manage a website manager, a team of advertising reps, and a team of illustrators. I also lay out the magazine myself and work with the printer when it comes time to print. It’s a big job, but very rewarding. We recently won a Gold Medalist Award and a Silver Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for our first two print issues and website!”
