Make Something Beautiful T-shirt
Neil Summerour keeps several sketchbooks, in which he records the “the ideas behind a doodle, notes of the ongoing production of a typeface, lettering and typeface ideas, etcetera. Make Something Beautiful came from a list of rants I scrawled one evening related to unfortunate trends I was seeing in creative circles.” One of those statements was Make Something Beautiful, which was “a feel-good statement, but it was left with zero conditions and challenges. So I added Every Day. Then it made sense to me.”
The Make Something Beautiful T-shirt is a reminder for all creatives to avoid doing the same thing every day, to find and make beautiful things, and to never be idle.
Neil began drawing at half scale (the original intended size was 28” by 20”) using a mix of pencil and sumi brush pen. “In total, about 18 near-complete sketches were produced to work out various aspects of the composition — angle and slant, mass and balance, contrast, finishing details. Once compiled and redrawn, a photograph was taken and brought into Adobe Illustrator. Vectors were polished in FontLab and reintroduced into Illustrator for final compositing.”
